First a confession: I have never read Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People. Sometimes, when I've lost or am rejected from a position, or hit mounds of bureautic red tape, I think... "I need to read that small pamphlet..." however, the title itself turned me off.
When I was younger because I'm an extrovert and not shy, most assumed I was in sales of some sort.
I believe I would be a horrible sales rep particularly for a product I didn't believe in.
I never wanted the art of the conversation or conversation in general to be transactional. How can this person help me? What can this person do for me?
I value authenticity too much.
A few weeks ago, Ben Lang posted a photo on slack of his two coworkers, they were admittedly quite young, but also probably better typists than I am. (*It was a picture of his young kids).
This brief and sideways silhouette of a person I am used to viewing head-on - both figuratively and literally (I have never seen a picture of him from a side angle :) contextualized a person who seems larger than life and he simply shared a photo of him being himself.
What I've found in my 9 months or so in this group, is that the founder cares deeply about his projects. He wants us to succeed, and he wants people to connect, And that is kindness. It's very difficult to fake for 9 months. Kindness is something the world needs a lot of right now. Kind Kompanies. Thanks for reading my novel. :)
Love this one! Actionable ideas are great. Having trouble picking one..
Helping a VC give feedback to its founders resulted in:
- My first angel check
- Joining Clay when it was < 30 people
- Meeting multiple founders who I’m collaborating with
I always say yes and try to be genuinely helpful.
It’s wild how it helps increase your surface area for luck.
